Silica or Silicon is found in plants at a similar level as most common micronutrients. It is often overlooked and deficiencies can cause severe issues in any growing programs.
Reasons it shouldn't be overlooked include:
- Plant grown in soils with low soluble silicon levels have a greater susceptibility to disease, drought and other plant stresses.
- Healthy levels of silicon have been shown to reduce phosphorous leaching within soils.
- Micronutrient uptake is improved in the presence of silica
There is an abundance of silica products on the market, most of these however are based on potassium-silicate which is produced from the alkaline hydrolysis of Silicon dioxide with potassium hydroxide.
This in turn gives you a very alkaline solution which makes it difficult to include in formulations and can have an adverse effect on plants ie. the application of alkaline products on potatoes makes them more susceptible to scab.
